President's Letter

Hello NACE Austin Chapter Members,

First and foremost, I am so honored to say that our chapter was nominated for 4 NACE ONE Awards at the national conference: Chapter of the Year, Fundraiser of the Year, Community Service of the Year and Chapter Program of the Year. If you haven’t already head, we took home not one, but TWO awards! We won Fundraiser of the Year and Communing Service of the Year! We’d also like to give a shout out to one of our members, Kat Creech, for winning the prestigious George Zell Spirit of NACE Award.

Experience! 2018 was an amazing conference not only for the educational content (and speakers like our very own Michele Schwartz) but for the showcasing of trends and designs that are so important to our industry. If you haven’t been to this conference, you should definitely plan on going next year!

Since we had the national conference in July and our AMAZING NACE Fundraiser in August, we only had one educational meeting this quarter in September about food styling and photography. Shout out to all of our sponsors: Balcones Country Club, Darcy Folsom of Food as Art, Kimberly Davis Photography, Monarch Event Rentals, Groove Labs, The Powder Sugar Room, Bloom & Leaf, Rachael Hall Photography and Dolce Paper. We have an awesome happy hour planned for October and meeting planned for November so make sure to save your seat now!

Our fall membership campaign is going on now! New professional members receive $100 off your annual membership! More details on that special here: https://www.nace.net/getspicy. We are also planning our fall membership happy hour later this month.  The board will be present to answer any questions for prospective members.

Ready to get more involved in the chapter? We'll be sending out a survey next week for anyone interested in joining one of our chapter committees for next year! Now is the time to step up!

We look forward to seeing you at our Happy Hour on October 18th!

Scholarships Winner's NACE Conference EXPERIENCES

Heather Hartzog, Fundraiser Co-Chair

I am so grateful for being granted the opportunity to attend conference this year.  The breakout sessions and Keynote speakers were wonderful and I came back with valuable knowledge to share with my team.  Seeing what other colleagues in the industry are coming up with not only refreshes your thought process, but it creates a bond with people across the country within the same industry.  It provides a brainstorming environment with networking opportunities to discuss challenges in events and how to overcome them as well as innovative ideas to bring back when you return home.  NACE has been such a wonderful organization locally, it is great to see what we are capable of at a national level.

Jyll Vertuno, CPCU; Past President

An Oasis of Creativity, Connection and Celebration”  The 2018 NACE Experience (National Conference) in Palm Springs, CA lived up to the name!

The quick-paced conference celebrated the 60th anniversary of NACE.  Attendees had time to be wowed by the food and beverage, entertainment, themes, and speakers.

The opening Coachella-themed event was very creative, and the foundation fundraiser with its 70’s country club theme, was hysterical. The awards dinner surprised us with Frank Sinatra impersonators!

The speakers this year were so motivating. They included opening speaker Cyndie Spiegel, JW Marriott Palm Springs Executive Chef Peter Smith, and AV event guru Julius Solaris.  We were captivated by their passion for what they do and their no-nonsense approach to life and our industry.

No conference would be complete without themes and a few nights of dancing, allowing time to catch up with old friends and make new ones.  It left me motivated to get back to Austin and share the inspiration with the teams at work, and with NACE Austin.

Blanca Cerda, Treasurer

This year NACE Experience was held in sunny JW Marriott Palms Springs California.. and boy was it HOT!  From the welcoming reception which brought us our very own Coachella music festival to the pavilion of the JW. The amazing pork belly mac cheese was what dreams are made of… and well the other carnival food with a little hint of Tito’s was everlasting. We even had our very own Ferris wheel! I felt like I was really at the festival among all my industry BFF’s from across the country.  But most importantly the educational content of the conference is what makes the conference worth the trip. From learning the upcoming trend on wines, food, and décor, we were inspired with ways to push forward in your personal career. Just the opening speaker Cyndie Spiegel and her creative collaboration speech on ‘The collective’ motivated us to step outside of our comfort zone to go after that booking, that client , that dream job. Every year I attend I always come back motivated and ready to take on the event world! Next year we are headed to Cincinnati, Ohio and would love to have a huge representation of the Austin Community… so come find me at the next NACE mtg and I can give you more information!

Michele Schwartz, Vice President

It was HOT!  The hottest city in the nation and not just because of the temperature.  The week of July 23 over 15 people from Austin NACE gathered for the annual Experience in Palm Springs, CA for team building, education and networking!  I’ve been to several NACE Experience conferences and this was hands down my favorite.  I am so impressed with how the National Board took all the feedback we as chapter leaders gave them last year and incorporated it into an even better “Experience” (pun intended) this year.  Highlights include the keynote presentation, several breakouts, getting to facilitate a session, catching up with friends from other cities and states, receiving the President’s Award and most of all bonding with all the amazing NACE Austin members who attended.  I made new friends and laughed so much my belly ached.  I’d tell you more, but, you know, “What happens in Palm Springs…”  Experience conference has me excited and ready to grow my leadership of NACE Austin as well as get my CPCE so I can strive to attain a leadership role at the national level too.

There were lots of great sessions that we’re hoping to bring to Austin next year for local meetings.  Do you have program ideas?  We’d love to hear them.

We also heard from the brand new NACE Executive Director, Lawrence Leonard, CAE, CMP and hear about the strategic plan.  We’ve invited Lawrence to come to Austin and work with the 2018-2019 board retreat as a way to make sure your Austin leadership is on track to win another Chapter of the Year award at next year’s Experience.

NACE Austin provides members with scholarship opportunities to attend Experience.  It is the best member benefit and I encourage everyone reading this to make sure to start earning points for the 2019 scholarship application.  You can earn points by attending meetings, serving on a committee or taking on a leadership position on the board.  We still have committee and board positions available.  If you want more information on how you can earn and apply for a scholarship for your professional development I encourage you to reach out to me.

Amber Scott, President

This was my second year receiving a scholarship from NACE Austin to attend Experience! While we get great education at the local level, the national conference allows you to network with the highest professionals nationwide. Not only is the education portion of the conference stellar, they raise the bar with our industry to provide networking opportunities and events to show off trends and event professionals we can bring back for inspiration.
